Wow, is it just me or has this year flown by?
I can’t believe it’s already August–which means it’s time to savor the last days of summer and start gearing up for my favorite season… Autumn!
In preparation, I’m going to share with you in the next few days my absolute favorite pieces for the upcoming season, what to buy, and where to buy it.
Today, however, I wanted to post about some of my current reads. For me, summer has always been about taking time to step back and learn more about the things I’m interested in.
One of the things I looked most forward to as a kid was going to the bookstore before our annual road trip to Texas and picking out the book I was going to get lost in during the drive from California. Even though I’m not going to Texas this summer, (I went during the spring this year!) or taking a big vacation, I still love to spend my downtime learning new things and getting lost in a good book.
Here’s what I’m reading this August…
An Innocent Fashion by R.J. Hernandez: In July, my friend RJ published his first novel and it’s received rave reviews from everyone from Racked to The Washington Post. It has been deemed by many critics “The Devil Wears Prada…but better.” The novel, which is largely autobiographical, highlights the protagonist Ethan’s time spent at a fashion magazine (essentially Vogue) and the reality and heartbreak that accompanies “following your dreams.” The back of the book sums it up the best—“You can follow your dreams, but what happens if your dreams are just not enough?”
Contagious by Jonah Berger: This book was actually recommended to me by my friend Audrey. It’s written by a Wharton marketing professor who has dedicated his entire research to the psychological and sociological elements that go into making an idea “contagious.” This book is a must read for any other bloggers/content creators out there since the whole book is dedicated to exploring why some things catch on in pop culture while others don’t.
16 Personalities MBTI Test: My department at work decided to do a whole course on MBTI personality tests with a leadership consultant. I’ve been reading up about my own personality type, ENFJ, but I encourage you to take the test and find out yours. It’s super interesting and pretty spot on!
Face Value: The Hidden Ways Beauty Shapes Women’s Lives by Autumn Whitefield-Madrano: The Hidden Ways Beauty Shapes Women’s Lives: I actually discovered this book because my dear friend Ally from Shybiker was interviewed for one of the chapters! I haven’t started this book yet, but I am super eager to since it explores the ways in which science, advertising, social media, and culture shape our perceptions of beauty.
Astrology Zone by Susan Miller: This one’s a given. If you haven’t heard of Susan Miller, she’s an absolute legend in the world of astrology/horoscopes, and writes the most in-depth monthly horoscopes as well as produces a great free online show each month!
