On the rare occasion that someone asks me what my favorite season is, the answer is always a no brainer. It’s fall. Big surprise, right?
Since yesterday marked the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year, it’s only appropriate to take some time and reflect upon the reasons I love autumn.
1. The Weather is Perfect
I’m practically a bear. Well, maybe bear isn’t the best way of putting it, but I’m basically the opposite of the 90 pound little old lady who is always freezing. I’m always overheated. Always.
When I die I hope to be buried with a window unit air conditioner built into my casket because I know that regardless of where I end up in the afterlife, I am not going to be satisfied with the temperature.
Oddly enough, even though I hate hot weather, I love sunshine. If it’s too dark outside I will lament endlessly. Fall’s “fourty degrees and sunny” suits me a lot better than summer’s “ninety-two and humid.” Thus, fall weather is my idea of perfect weather. Even when it rains, it’s better in the fall.
2. Fall Fashion
Let’s face it, during the summer getting dressed is more of a nuisance than a joy. You can’t really enjoy anything you’re wearing because it’s too hot out! Fall’s weather let’s my wardrobe “breathe,” and I’m actually able to wear my favorite pieces–which all happen to be long sleeved.
3. My Birthday
It should be a given that since the most important day of the year (October 24—exactly one month from today!) is during fall, it would be my favorite season. I’m turning 25 this year, and am already bracing myself for a quarter-life existential crisis that will put Sartre’s to shame. Stay tuned.
4. Pumpkin Pie
Call me basic, but pumpkin has always been my favorite. We already talked about this–I can’t help it, I like what I like. In fact, I love it so much I always have my mom bake me one for my birthday (see above) instead of a cake.
5. Seeing My Favorite Bands
CBGB Festival and CMJ are throughout October, which means that almost every band worth listening will be making a pit stop in NY at some point that month. This fall I am most looking forward to seeing The Meat Puppets play on Halloween as well as Enemy Planes the week before (aka the day after point 3.)
6. Wearing My Leather Jacket
To add on to my above point, it’s only appropriate to bring up leather jackets–Who goes to a show without one? I’ve had the same leather jacket from AllSaints for over four years now, and I can’t live without it. Yes, I’ve tried wearing it in the heat of summer, but it just isn’t enjoyable. (See point 2!) I’m looking forward to temperatures dropping low enough to wear mine comfortably throughout both day and night.
7. Going to the Ballet
Yesterday, appropriately, was the New York City Ballet’s Fall Gala. The gala is one of the events I look most forward to every year since I danced ballet for 12 years of my life. This season’s costumes were designed by Thom Browne, Sarah Burton, Mary Katrantzou, and Carolina Herrera. You can visit my instagram for photos from the event!
8. Seasonal Scented Candles
They say smell is the quickest sense to trigger a memory. Anthropologie’s mulled wine, pumpkin spice, and baked goods scented candles remind me of time spent in Seattle, cozying up with a book on cold damp days.
9. The MLB Playoffs
You may not know this from my blog alone (which is even more reason why you should follow me on Instagram!) but I love baseball! I am a huge Angels fan, and am so excited that they’re actually in the playoffs this year! You can find me most of early October at a sports bar, yelling at the television.
10. Doing This
I mean, obviously. Who doesn’t love doing this?
Let me know what you think of my list, and tell me some of the reasons you love fall as well!
