Why W Mag’s Balmain Feature Matters

What do you see when you look at this photo from W Magazine’s September issue?


Three of the world’s most iconic and fashionable women: Rihanna, Naomi, and Iman, dressed head to toe in Balmainobviously.  These women are so influential that they don’t need introductions, let alone last names for the world to know who they are.

However, acknowledging these women for their beauty alone would be a gross under appreciation of their talents and character.  As the brand’s creative director, Olivier Rousteing, puts it himself, “These women are inspiring to so many different people. Bringing them together reflects the concept I’m working toward.”

This may seem like a large leap, but in my opinion this campaign elevates the industry’s pre-existing standard of beauty to encompass more than physical appearance.

When I look at this feature I don’t see cookie cutter beauty.  I see three individuals with strength, ambition, personality, and success.
